Why Christians Need More Sex Awareness

There is a great Video on YouTube that mentioned how Christians in general can be contradictory in their value systems based on simple things like the T.V. shows they watch. This particular video I watched pointed out how blatantly obsessive some Christians are about Desperate Housewives, WifeSwap, etc.

As the years rapidly end and our society makes bold plans to moves forward with new social changes, you try to find things that support your current views about life, love, money, religion/faith, hoping to resist changes that you perceive will effect you negatively.

In so many large ways, Christianity is under attack; not because of same-sex marriage and not because of wade vs. roe, but because our lives are influenced by so many subconscious factors that are out of our control. It’s been time for Christians to talk about sex more openly, with tact of course, but I guarantee Christianity will crumble because of the lack of a united front from churches, leaders, married couples, and Christian singles regarding issues / concerns related to sex and sexuality.

Sex and sexuality is no longer an under the rug topic for the new wave of Christians…and Christian teens. There are dozens of articles that mention how Christian teens under the age of 18 are including oral sex in their dating process. It is so serious that some Christians are willing to sue to protect their private affairs, and why not? At times it seems that the governing body of Christ does not care about sex and sexuality until it affects them in a negative way.

Last year a church suspended a Dallas preschool teacher with pay until she had her baby, based on the fact that they do not support premarital sex.

Via New York Times:

In June 2005, First Baptist told her that she would be suspended with pay until she had her baby, Brown said. She filed a complaint with the EEOC and was allowed to return to work but she was made a part-time employee and lost insurance benefits, according to the lawsuit.

….At another meeting, Brown said the human resources director told her that she was “not living a Christian lifestyle” and that she would have to sign a statement agreeing not to have premarital sex if she wanted to keep her job.

It is hard to control the actions of others but it is harder to control the actions of others when your attempts to do so are solely for self-preservation, without concern for the other person. Any church wants to be the role model and should be a role model for others to follow, especially when there are children involved. But being a role model and thus living up to the standards of one, can not be enforced – not today and not ever.

The two questions I ask are:

* Is it any better if the teacher still works at the church after the pregnancy?

* Is the concern that she had premarital sex or that she’s visibly pregnant and “misrepresenting” the church?
If the church is concerned about the teacher not having premarital sex and living up to their standards then I wonder:

  • Are they offering her any counseling (from someone outside of the church)
  • Do they care about the teacher outside of her duties at church (ie:are they only interested in self preservation)
  • What is their hiring process and do they include any friendly checkups / support groups for single men and women that give them something to do with their spare time.

What’s The Big Deal?

The big deal is there are two messages that the church can send:

  • We support premarital sex by allowing this teacher to still “teach” (even though they could probably assign her another task that may not put her in public view, if that is their concern)
  • We are not a church that offers aid to pregnant teachers.

In so many ways I think this is a good example to point out the way Christians can be abusively desperate to be right, that they don’t let the public see the side of Christians and the Christian church that is:

  • Real
  • Dealing with the same issues as non-Christians
  • Accepting but insistent on change
  • Helpful

It’s been a decade since the What Would Jesus Do (W.W.J.D.) campaigns, but I have a new idea that I hope to kick off soon – How Would Jesus Judge. – a post W.W.J.D. campaign that really hopes to dig up some valuable answers from judgmental Christians.
